-= on the 5th annual homelessness marathon =-

I've just gotten back on track in terms of sleep cycle; yesterday I went to bed at 8AM after staying up all night to hear first-hand, the 5th annual homelessness marathon.

It was one of those events that you see coming from a mile away, but still approaches quickly, and you just cross your fingers and hope that everything goes well. Although I helped with food last year, and did some volunteering as a technician three years ago, this was the first marathon that I participated on-air. Fiona and I co-hosted the 11th hour of the marathon, which was focused on Policing Poverty. It went really well!

Just half an hour before our hour, I met Jade in front of the native friendship centre. He was smoking a cigarette, and wondering how he might be able to speak on the air about his experience living on the streets of Montreal, pan-handling and doing sex work to get by. He brought a very important perspective to the discussion. It was an excellent mix of well-informed, researched commentaries on how police interact with homeless people, and testimonies from two men with first-hand experience of police brutality on the streets of Montreal. If you listen to it, let me know what you thought...

-=- a whole new look -=-

A spontaneous mini-marathon of web design trial and error has resulted in a whole new look for the website. The camera featured at the top of the other pages is a new feature of my daily life. It's on the wall across from my front door. I thought I would share it with all of you. Nice, huh?

My friend Ozkan has contributed a series of photos. He is graciously willing to share them under the same idea as the audio. Also, he doesn't mind me chopping them up to fit them into the webpage. Thanks!

About mtl2012_episode5:
The 17 january broadcast was a success! Also a lesson in what could be better. We found that maybe we aren't the best improvisers, and that there is a large grey area regarding what exacly the mtl2012 world is like. Disagreement about the scenario makes it harder to belief. Characters gotta be on the same page. episode6 will get recorded this weekend. Feeling pretty inspired by a few sound documentaries. Diggin' the sonic atmospheres that can be created without too much difficulty. Also, gonna get a recording of the radical rhythms drum practice, + spontaneous interviews, yes.

Oh yeah, there's this small experiement in .php: http://mtlaudio.org/hello.php

-=- mtl2012 on the air -=-

mtl2012_episode4 was played, in part, today on the Friday Morning After. Very exciting. Getting motivated to produce #5. Hearing it in between contempory reports, and hosts explanations of whats' going on, assuring listeners that it is indeed a fictional vision of Montreal in 2012... very interesting.

An excerpt from Tims' comments on the recording:
"This is serious shit to explore, I wouldnt want to trivialize it. The concept for the radio drama is good: a post-collapse radio show interviewing characters in a post collapse world. If you tuned into it by accident, it would definitely catch your attention."

And from Colin:
"I think that it was a great excercise and learning experience about the power of radio. To make that same drama on film would have taken a lot of time and money to produce something so simple."

Radio is more popular world-wide than internet and television because it does not induce mental and physical stupification. You can do other things while you listen to radio, and imagination replaces the jolt-brain-damage so prevelent in commercial television. Instead of adverts for non-sensical products, we hear an announcement about Arts' Birthday, to be celebrated with a special five-hour broadcast on 17 January.

mmmmm...
radio.

-=- mtlaudioblog is born! -=-

Oh yes... amid a flurry of ideas about where to go with the website, I figured I'd best claim the blogspot while I could. Methinks I'll make this place for longer-winded, less relevant rantings about the project, and maybe even life in general! I'll start bugging you, you internauts, to start leaving comments...

Reflecting on the recording of mtl2012_episode4:
Collective writing is an interesting process. Depending on who is involved, who is trying to work together, it can be painful or fun. It always yields a unique result. As part of the Coop Sur Genereux's Skillshare Weekend, I facilitated a "radio from the FUTURE" workshop, based on the mtl2012 productions. Participants were invited to develop a character that inhabited the post-"economic and ecological catastrophe that completely changed life as we knew it" island of Montreal. Instead of questioning and debating the details of this world, we listened to episode3, and started writing quietly. Over the next two hours, we shared the thoughts, activities, and lives of our new characters, and developed questions that they might like to be asked in an interview. This process worked really well, and I'm really happy and eager to be producing the recordings this week. Also as part of the workshop, all three participants had a chance to learn how to use a portable mini-disc recorder. They did a good job too! I'll bug them to leave their own comments, and reflections on the workshop, and responses to the finished product.
